How to Choose the Right Walk-In Shower for Your Home
A well-designed walk-in shower can transform a bathroom, creating a space that feels open, sophisticated, and functional. From sleek frameless glass enclosures to luxurious steam showers, there are plenty of options to consider when planning a bathroom renovation.
But choosing the right style involves more than following the latest design trends. The space you have available, your budget, how you use your bathroom, and how long you plan to stay in your home should all influence your decision.

My philosophy is simple: good design should be beautiful, practical, and timeless. The best walk-in shower is one that complements your home, makes everyday routines easier, and continues to serve you well for years to come.
1. Frameless Glass Showers: Clean, Modern, and Versatile
Frameless glass showers remain a popular choice because they create a clean, streamlined appearance without visually closing off the space. The transparency of the glass allows the tile, stone, and other design details to take centre stage, helping the bathroom feel more open.
Two particularly popular options are sliding frameless glass doors and single fixed glass panels.
Sliding Frameless Glass Doors
Sliding doors are an excellent option when space is limited. Because the doors slide rather than swing open, they don't require additional clearance and can work well in bathrooms where the shower is close to a vanity, toilet, or other fixture.
Single Fixed Glass Panels
For a more minimalist look, a single fixed glass panel can create an open, contemporary shower without the visual complexity of a full enclosure. The key is ensuring the shower is designed with enough space and appropriate water containment to prevent splashing into the rest of the bathroom.
Hinged Glass Doors
Hinged doors offer another attractive option when there is sufficient room for the door to swing comfortably. The best configuration ultimately depends on the bathroom layout and how the space will be used.
The important thing to remember is that the most attractive option isn't always the most practical. A good design considers how the shower fits into the entire bathroom, rather than treating it as a separate feature.
2. Curbless and Open Showers: A Seamless, Spacious Feel
Curbless showers eliminate the traditional raised threshold, creating a more continuous floor between the shower and the rest of the bathroom. This approach is popular in contemporary design because it reduces visual interruptions and can make a bathroom feel larger.
It can also make entering and exiting the shower easier, which is worth considering if you're planning to stay in your home for many years.
However, a curbless shower requires careful planning. Proper drainage, floor slope, waterproofing, and water containment are essential. Depending on the existing bathroom construction, achieving a barrier-free design may involve additional work and expense.
Open showers with a fixed glass panel can also create an elegant, uncluttered appearance. However, the shower's dimensions, the placement of the shower head, and the direction of the water spray all need to be considered.
A beautiful open shower should work just as well in practice as it looks in a photograph.
3. Steam Showers: Bringing the Spa Experience Home
For homeowners looking to create a more luxurious bathroom, a steam shower can be an appealing upgrade.
Unlike a conventional walk-in shower, a steam shower is enclosed all the way to the ceiling to contain the steam. This creates a more immersive, spa-like experience in the comfort of your own home.
A built-in bench can make the experience even more relaxing, while thoughtfully positioned controls and shelves help keep everything comfortable and convenient.
Steam showers generally require a greater investment than standard showers. The enclosure, waterproofing, ceiling, ventilation, and steam-generating equipment all need to be designed for this purpose, making professional planning particularly important.
If your budget allows and you value the experience, a steam shower can turn an everyday routine into something that feels a little more indulgent.
4. Natural Stone and Neutral Colours: A Timeless Combination
When it comes to choosing finishes, I believe natural stone and neutral colours offer an enduring foundation for a beautiful walk-in shower.
Soft whites, warm beiges, subtle greys, and natural stone textures create a calm, understated atmosphere. Rather than relying on bold colours or decorative details that may quickly date, these materials allow the bathroom to feel sophisticated without being overly trendy.
Glass plays an important role in showcasing these choices. Because it allows the eye to travel through the enclosure, it highlights the stone, tile, and overall design rather than competing with them.
Large-format tiles can also contribute to a clean, contemporary look by reducing the number of grout lines. Natural stone, meanwhile, brings unique variations in colour and texture that can make a shower feel distinctive.
There are practical considerations, too. Different types of natural stone require different levels of care and sealing, while tile texture and grout selection can affect maintenance and slip resistance.
A timeless design doesn't have to be plain. It simply relies on quality materials and thoughtful choices rather than chasing every new trend.
5. Built-In Benches and Practical Shower Storage
Some of the most valuable shower features are the ones you may not immediately notice in a design photograph. A built-in bench and well-positioned shelving can make a significant difference to everyday comfort and convenience.
Built-In Shower Benches
A bench can be a wonderful addition when you're younger, providing a comfortable place to sit, shave, or simply enjoy a more relaxed shower experience. As you get older, it can become an even more valuable practical feature.
This is a good example of why it's worth thinking beyond your immediate needs when renovating. A shower is a long-term investment, and a feature that feels like a luxury today may become particularly useful in the future.
Niches and Shelving
Practical shelves and built-in niches are another game changer. When positioned at a convenient height and within easy reach, they keep shampoo, soap, and other essentials accessible without cluttering the shower floor.
Their placement should be considered early in the design process. A beautifully finished niche isn't particularly useful if it's awkward to reach or doesn't accommodate the products you use.
These thoughtful details can be incorporated into almost any style of walk-in shower, from minimalist contemporary designs to bathrooms featuring more traditional natural stone.
6. Shower Hardware: Choose Timeless Over Trendy
Shower hardware and faucets have a significant influence on the overall appearance of a bathroom. Chrome, brushed nickel, matte black, and warm metallic finishes each create a different look and feel.
However, hardware finishes are particularly susceptible to changing trends. What's fashionable today may look dated in a few years.
My preference is to keep the main design elements simple and timeless, allowing the natural materials and overall layout to create the lasting appeal. Hardware can then complement the design rather than dictate it.
That doesn't mean you can't choose a finish that expresses your personal style. The important thing is to consider how it will work with the stone, tile, glass, and other finishes in your bathroom, and whether you'll still appreciate the combination years from now.
7. Design for Comfort Today and for the Future
One of the most important considerations when choosing a walk-in shower is how comfortable it will be to use every day.
It's easy to become focused on tile samples, glass options, and hardware finishes, but the practical details often have the greatest impact on your long-term satisfaction.
Before finalizing your design, consider the following:
- Ease of entry: Is it comfortable to step into the shower, and would a curbless or low-threshold design make access easier?
- Control placement: Can you turn on the water without standing directly beneath the spray?
- Storage: Are shelves and niches positioned where you can reach them easily?
- Seating: Would a built-in bench improve comfort now and provide additional practicality in the future?
- Future accessibility: Would planning for grab bars or other accessibility features make the shower more adaptable as your needs change?
These details may not be the first things you notice when looking at a finished bathroom, but they can make a real difference to how well the space functions.
I believe it's important to view a bathroom renovation as a long-term investment. Trends will come and go, but a well-designed shower should continue to feel comfortable, functional, and attractive for many years.
